Experience Community and Culture at Tambayan Sessions in Merkado PH

Tambayan Sessions at Merkado PH is a unique cultural initiative aimed at creating a welcoming space where both Filipinos and non-Filipinos can come together to experience and celebrate Filipino culture. Set in Merkado PH, a Filipino store located in Torslanda torg, Sweden, these sessions offer more than just an opportunity to shop for Filipino products—they are designed to replicate the spirit of community that is deeply rooted in the Filipino way of life.

In Filipino culture, a "tambayan" refers to a place where friends, neighbors, or family members casually gather to hang out, relax, and chat—much like a social hub. These spots are often simple, informal, and brimming with a sense of togetherness. The word itself stems from "tambay," which loosely means "to hang out." The Tambayan Sessions at Merkado PH bring this essence of connection and community to life in Sweden.

Concept behind Tambayan Sessions:

Cultural Exchange and Connection: The sessions create a space where people of all backgrounds—whether you're Filipino or not—can learn about and experience Filipino culture firsthand. It’s an opportunity to share stories, traditions, and the warm hospitality that Filipinos are known for. This fosters a sense of understanding and connection across cultures.

Pakikipagkapwa (Sense of Fellowship): A core Filipino value, "pakikipagkapwa" means treating others as fellow human beings with dignity and respect. During Tambayan Sessions, participants engage in meaningful conversations, share experiences, and help each other, embodying this deep sense of fellowship. It’s a place where everyone feels like family, fostering a warm, inclusive atmosphere.

Showcasing Filipino Products and Traditions: The sessions are not just about selling products—they’re about showcasing the stories behind them. Whether it’s a Filipino delicacy or a handcrafted item, these products are expressions of Filipino heritage. By experiencing them together, attendees learn about Filipino traditions and the significance of everyday things in Filipino life.

A Fun and Vibrant Community Gathering: The Philippines is known for its lively and joyous community spirit, from festive gatherings to simple street-side conversations. The Tambayan Sessions reflect this energy. Attendees can expect a fun, relaxed environment where they can share food, laughter, and conversation—replicating the feel of Filipino get-togethers, but in a Swedish context. Tambayan always has music involved. Whether it’s a simple acoustic guitar, a four-piece acoustic band, or just karaoke/videoke, there is always music to keep the spirit lively and the atmosphere warm.

Breaking Barriers: For non-Filipinos, Tambayan Sessions provide an open invitation to immerse themselves in another culture, without the formalities often associated with cultural exchanges. It’s casual, warm, and interactive, making it easy for everyone to participate and enjoy. It breaks down barriers, offering a comfortable way to understand the unique Filipino way of life.

For non-Filipinos, the essence of Tambayan Sessions is not hard to relate to because, at its core, it’s about human connection, sharing, and community—universal concepts that transcend cultural boundaries. Whether it’s bonding over food, sharing stories, or simply spending time together in a relaxed setting, the Tambayan Sessions tap into a shared human desire for belonging and understanding.

In summary, Tambayan Sessions at Merkado PH aim to bring the Filipino spirit of community, fun, and warmth to Sweden. It’s a space for everyone to connect, learn, and enjoy, regardless of cultural background, while promoting Filipino values and products in an open and inviting way.
